2. The Help (2011)
In this movie, Emma is an aspiring journalist, a young southern society girl. She wants to become an author. The film is set in the 1960s with Mississippi as the backdrop. Working as Eugenia Skeeter Phelan in “The Help” was certainly not an easy thing as the flick tackles complex emotions involving social prejudice, friendship, racism, feminism, and acceptance.
So the movie expected Stone to deliver some dedicated and serious performance and the actress succeeded in doing just that. And yes, she had a good help from the other star cast of the movie including Viola Davis (Oscar nomination for the movie) and Octavia Spencer (winner of Best Supporting Actress Oscar).
“The Help” adapted from the bestselling book of Kathryn Stockett by the same name revealed to the world that Emma Stone is one of the best young actresses who will surely make a big name for herself in the years to come.
Performance Review
In one of the reviews, The Hollywood Reporter writer, Kirk Honeycutt wrote that Stone acquits herself well in the role of Skeeter Phelan. The Los Angeles Times also said that the actress did well whereas Miami Herald said that Emma gave a heartfelt performance of a college graduate who feels awkward socially but still dreams of becoming an author one day.
