4. Pretty Woman (1990)
Since the release of this film, the actress has always been addressed as “Pretty Woman” by everyone and undoubtedly it is one of the most memorable roles of Roberts. The mother-of-three was nominated for the Oscar the second time around for her great performance.
In the movie, Julia plays the role of a hooker who has an extensive knowledge about dental hygiene and cars. Her co-star, Richard Gere who can be rightly said to be playing the knight in shining armor takes her off the streets and the whole story is how he uses Roberts as his accompaniment and later on both fall in love with each other.
One of the most successful romantic comedies ever made, it really established Julia Roberts as the big-time star.
Performance Review
The character of Vivian played by Roberts in “Pretty Woman” is quite interesting and importantly she through her typical acting style added hints of an irrepressibly bouncy sense of humor and then throughout the whole movie tries to repress it. Critics appreciated Julia saying that if anyone can do it then he/she can do anything and do whatever they want in Hollywood.
Julia Roberts have added charm and warmth to the character of Vivian which no one could have done and yes, she is the major reason why the movie was such a big hit. The one particular shot when Gere’s Edward thinks that Vivian is doing drugs and instead she is flossing speak volumes how mere expressions can convey the message.
The toothy and gawky smile of Roberts at that moment makes you forget that she is a hooker who exchanges sex for money with strangers.
